Signaling over 3 Miles (5 km) with a Mirror

If you’re planning to venture out into the wilderness to camp or hike in unknown territory, it’s a good idea to bring certain items along. Specifically, those that will come in handy if you find yourself lost, your phone battery dies, and now you’re pitted against nature’s fury with all of its wild animals and lack of available drinking fountains.

Of course, things like a portable Altoids tin candle stove and a method to procure some clean drinking water are important. But perhaps even more so is something that will assist you in becoming not lost anymore. Unless your plan is to simply call the forest your new home, the idea is to get back to the comfort of your living room. And soon, because dammit, the new and final season of Game of Thrones is on its way and you have priorities.

As it turns out, one of the most important items you can bring with you on your excursion into the unknown is a signal mirror. Sure, starting a fire might help, as may spelling out a “HELP” or “SOS” message on the beach if you’re near one, but a flash from a mirror can be seen from miles away. Which we know because we tried it, and the results were pretty remarkable.
